Italian-Americans Making a Difference
Every year members of the St Mary of Carmen Society support families and local organizations in our community.
Community Support:
Since 1935 the society has been proud to provide financial support to families and organizations in need within our community. Below is a list of just a few of the many different things we have continued to support over the years. The society hosts various events throughout the year to help us support others in the community.
Click here for a list of some of the organizations the society has supported. In 2019 alone, we donated $26,000 via scholarships and community support.
Italian-American Festival:
For 85 years the society has organized the annual Italian-American festival in Newton. We bring together our Nonantum community along with many of the surrounding communities to celebrate our traditions and heritage at an event attended by over 10,000 people annually. Scholarships:
The society has donated over $100,000 in scholarships to students at a variety of local schools. We are happy to provide financial assistance to a wide range of families in and around our community. If you would like to learn more about our scholarship program, or apply for a scholarship, visit the scholarship page.
How You Can Help:
As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization our ability to conduct a wide range of charitable ventures relies solely on the generous donations of businesses and individuals. For example, you or your business can support the society through sponsorship of our annual festival or by placing an ad in our program book which is distributed to festival attendees and surrounding businesses each year. See the festival page for information on these opportunities or send us an e-mail.
You can also make an online donation here.

Check out our photo book from the 60th Festival (1996):
Our statue of La Madonna Del Carmine was modeled after the Madonna (pictured here) in the town of Riccia, a little town in the province of Campobasso, in the region of Molise. The founders of our society all came from different towns and regions of Italy, someone from the Campobasso area must have had the suggestion, as La Madonna Del Carmine is popular all over Italy. The statues are almost identical except for the extra clothing on the one in Italy.
